As long as he is healthy and strong, he can be castrated (also called gelded) as soon as both testicle are visible outside of his body.

I have gelded colts as young as 7 days old; they were born without any problems during birth, were strong and healthy, and there was no reason not to geld.

I prefer to geld colts by the time they are about 2 months old. While they are that young, the surgery is very simple and safe because the incisions are small, there is usually VERY little bleeding, and the foal will walk around on his own following his mother.

It is extremely important to keep a colt moving after he's been gelded because he's going to be sore - he won't WANT to move unless he has to. If he's still depending on the mare for most of his food, he will follow her around to nurse and that will keep his incisions draining and heal well.

If you wait until a colt is weaned, or older, you will have to either hand walk him to keep him moving enough that the incisions will drain and heal from the inside out, etc. It is MUCH easier to geld a colt young!

Some advantages to gelding young:

Testosterone production is GREATLY decreased (the pituitary gland produces testosterone also, so there is still SOME), so no stallion behaviors

Your colt will get TALLER than if you did not geld him - that's not a joke. Testosterone is a growth inhibitor, so stallions are generally about 2 or more inches shorter than they may have been as geldings.

Zero chances of testicular cancer
