Gater snakes
what kind of snake has a black head and a red body. i found it in sand dunes walking along the beach in ST. Augustine Florida. does anybody know.
This is called a flicking of the tongue. A snake smells with its tongue, so it will flick its tongue a lot. it uses its tongue for sensing its prey and when it gets close enough it leaps and bits.
Answer Depending on the order of the stripes and the area where you live it is either a coral snake or a type of milk snake. I have just googled this because of a snake on a TV advert (in the UK). I reckon it could easily be a corn snake. They aren't actually stripes, but really look like stripes.
The black snake that has a pattern on it is the ring snake.
When a snake does that it sniffs the air or gathering chemicals to sense prey.
No. There is not a set tongue color for poisonousand harmless snakes. A garter snake has both red and black on its tongue
Northern Black Racer
I believe you are talking about the Northern Ring snake.

Without pictures it is impossible to tell but all snakes are reclusive and will hide from a predator. No snake (save for possibly the black mamba) will chase down a predator. There are two species of black snakes in the pine barrens. The Northern Black Racer and Black Rat Snake. Both are nearly all black with white or light markings on their chin and throat. The Rat Snake is noticeably lighter in color on its underside. The Black Racer is typically a more aggressive snake than the Rat Snake but it will retreat as well when given the chance. As its name implies the Racer can move very quickly.
If the stripes are light in color, maybe even off white it could be a CA king snake.
A snake's tongue is a 'sensory organ'. Each side of the tongue is monitored separately by the brain - enabling the snake to determine which way to go in search of food.
