56% of dogs and 71% of cats are euthanized at animal shelters == ==
They give shelter to homeless animals, and give the animals a place to eat and sleep.
they are given an overdose which slowly kills them It is said that cats that are taken to shelters are immediately put to death by having the air sucked from their lungs. I have stroked my pets as they are helped to heaven by the vet who uses an injection which clearly causes no discomfort and the pet passes gently not immediately but not too slowly.
There are different types of animal shelters, including municipal shelters run by local government agencies, private shelters funded by donations, breed-specific shelters, no-kill shelters that do not euthanize animals, and rescue organizations that focus on specific species or situations (e.g., wildlife rescue). Each type serves the purpose of providing temporary care and finding homes for homeless animals.
In my opinion, yes. Animals should not be killed if they can't get adopted. Put it this way, if you were in a foster home and you couldn't get adopted, would you want to be killed? No, so why should the shelters kill the animals? Exactly, they shouldn't because that is called abuse. So final answer: All animal shelters should become no-kill animal shelters.
Shelters may euthanize animals to prevent suffering due to overcrowding, illness, or behavior issues. This difficult decision is made to ensure the overall well-being of the animals in their care and to prevent the spread of disease in confined spaces. Many shelters work hard to promote adoptions, provide medical care, and implement behavior training programs to minimize the need for euthanasia.
4 million animals die a year because there isn't enough room in animal shelters!!

Usually, they are kept or put into foster homes. In certain countries they are shot, but in most they are put to sleep.
It is difficult to give an accurate answer - many hundreds of thousands of animals are put to sleep each year, but the number will vary from country to country. "Too many" is my personal answer, as too many pets are being bred from, which can produce animals with poor health and temperaments, or people owning pets but are ignorant to the animal's needs, so will put them to sleep or put into shelters, where most are put to sleep in order to create more room for new animals being brought in.
Because there are so many animals there that don't have homes that their only choice is to put them to sleep. :( There aren't enough shelters or adoptive parents for all the animals. Most of the shelters live on donations as well. Some animals have had a rough life and can not be rehabilitated and is dangerous to to people while others are too sick.
You mean euthanized, which is put to sleep, killed. Not sedated, which just makes you take a long nap. Some shelters will not place a pit bull, but other do a emperament check and try to place them just like other dogs. You would have to check individual shelters to find a percentage.

they put them down (to sleep) after a specific period of time as this helps control the unwanted pet problem and helps make room for new animals that may have a better chance at finding a new home
It is estimated that millions of animals are euthanized in shelters each year, with the exact number varying depending on factors such as location and shelter policies. Efforts are being made to reduce euthanasia rates through increased adoption, spaying/neutering, and education.
