Dogs don't "smell" fear they sense it. They can sense it in humans better then in any other animal because they have the best sense of human emotion, feelings, and other things out of all animals including other humans sensing it in other animals comes from their hunting ancestors, wolves.
guns
Big dogs, alarm systems, police, screaming, and weapons like baseball bats, tasers, and guns. Police officers will tell you that having a big dog inside the house with you is your very best defense.

Some people are afraid of dogs because they have had bad experiences with them. But I personally, love dogs... ;) Some people just feel that a dog will hurt them. If people have bad experiences with them, then they probably are just sick of it and hate being around them. Maybe they have heard of people being hurt by dogs and don't want it to happen to them. Some people just don't want to be around dogs. Maybe it is the size or behavior of the dog that scares them.

Dogs are often scared away by loud noises, unfamiliar scents, sudden movements, or aggressive behavior. To prevent this, avoid making loud noises around dogs, introduce them to new scents gradually, move slowly around them, and always approach them calmly and gently.
