It is good to feed them about twice to three times a day, in the morning and afternoon are my reccomended times. When the dog is an adult though you can shorten that to one meal a day, size of meal varies on the breed. For a more detailed explanation, go to your local vet. ;)

When you put down the food and the dogs goes to it, pick it up again as soon as the dog leaves it.
The dog will eventually learn to eat all the food quickly while it can. This ensures that the dog will eat all of the food, and get the maximum benefit of it.
