Some shed all year long but spring is the worst time because they shed their winter coat.

They also shed vigorously in the Autumn to prepare for their winter coat. In the spring they shed their thicker winter coat to put on a thinner summer coat. In the fall the process is reversed, they get rid of their summer coat to put on a warmer winter coat.

What are some breeds of dogs that don't shed or smell too bad?

All dogs shed, even the "hairless" breeds, although there is much less shedding in some over others. The most common mixed breed dogs that people buy that don't shed as much are those that are Poodle crosses with other breeds. Some of the "designer dogs" that result are the Labradoodle, cockapoo, goldendoodle, etc.If you find a mix that has a terrier ancestry and the rough coat of the wire-haired terriers, that might be one that sheds less, but it depends upon what's in the mix. Similarly, dogs with short coats usually do not shed as much as long haired dogs. Smaller dogs are better with shedding problems than larger dogs, just because there is less hair to shed in smaller dogs.

Is your dog supposed to shed in the winter?

Dogs can shed at any time of the year. You would think the middle of winter would be the wrong time to be shedding especially if you live a cold climate. Different dogs seem to have different cycles and shed at different times and they are not weather dependent.
