John Shields performed invaluable service for the Corps as a blacksmith and gunsmith; he also assisted in boat repair whenever needed. When Shields fixed the main spring on Lewis' air gun, the captain noted, "we have been much indebted to this man on many occaisonsl without having served any regular apprenticeship to any trade, he makes his own tools principally and works extreemly servicable to us, as well as being a good hunter and an excellent waterman." Not only did Shields repair tools, he also took the suggestion of one of his Mandan patrons and produced battle-axes and arrow points in addition to scrapers for treating hides.
