The do not drink water through their nose (trunk). They suck water up the trunk and then put their trunk in their mouths and squirt the warer out of the trunk into their mouths to drink.

When eating, they wrap their trunk around grasses, limbs, or twigs, tear it off, and then transfer it to their mouth with their trunk so that they can eat it.
When drinking, they suck water up into their trunks, then place their trunks in their mouth and pour the water in so that they can swallow it.
The trunks, then, are used to transport food and water to the mouth where it is eaten.
