∙ 13y agoFemale dogs do not technically have periods. They often have a bloody vaginal discharge during oestrus, but this is not the same thing as menstruation; among other differences, it occurs before rather than after ovulation and is due to a completely different biological process.
Most female dogs go into heat for the first time somewhere between the ages of six and eighteen months. It may occasionally delay a bit longer than that, but nearly always commences before the end of their second year.
