Best Answer

Yes. Recent studies have shown that squirrels have an amazing sense of spatial awareness that helps them remember where they put the nuts at. In addition to ground coordinates, they have to deal with the elevation as well. Answer Yes. As the above answer states, their ability is simply "AMAZING." They use a system of triangulation to remember where they have hidden their food. They triangulate the location of hiding places using what we would call "landmarks." While the human brain might be able to remember 4 or 5 triangulations to locate something, the tiny squirrel brain can remember 300 to 400 triangulations to locate the food they have hidden.

Squirrels bury their food because they need a safe place to store it. When they get hungry they come back and dig their nuts up. Squirrels do not always remember where they buried their nuts so in this way they help regrow trees.

Red squirrels don't bury their food, instead they stash their nuts up in piles in trees.

Grey squirrels are the ones who bury their food.
