The best month to breed a mare is May. They carry their foals 11 months and this way, your young one will be born in April. Spring is a good time to be a foal! And they have all summer and fall to grow before the harshness of winter.

Age for breeding - Most mares are able to be breed from their first "heat" cycle, about 18 months of age, up until they no longer have "regular" cycles. Most breeders like to start at age four because the mare is finished growing at this age. Sometimes the mare can breed into her late teens. With stallions, or studs, most breeders try to do training, such as breaking and manners, when the stallion is two years old, so that he'll be easier to handle when they start breeding him at three or four. Don't start breeding your stallion too young or you'll never get anything else accomplished.

At the time nature intended, spring or early summer. This way, the foal will be born in decent temperature and will have a while before the cold winter, and by then he will have a good coat to keep him warm. Also, in the spring the mare has plenty of grass to eat to help produce milk. I couldn't have come up with a better plan myself.

However, if you plan on showing him, then you might try to get him born as early in the year as possible so that he has an advantage over horses born later in the year since they are considered a year older on January 1st most of the time. In this case, there are quite a few things you would have to do to get your horse to think its spring in the middle of winter and it could be damaging to your mares health.

You should mate horses late, late winter or early spring so they have their foals early early fall or summerSpring or early summer is better, because the foal will have a longer time before the cold winter.

It doesn't matter to the horses. The mares only have to be in heat.

If allowed to cycle normally most mares at northern latitudes will

go into anestrus for several months out of the year.

Mares have a natural breeding season for horse Answers.com. Most mares have regular "heat" cycles during the spring and summer months, ceasing during the fall. These "heat" cycles are triggered by the warmer weather, which stimulates the brain to produce the reproductive Answers.com

With some thoroughbreds, artificial light and heat are used - such as electric lights in stables - so that the mare will breed earlier and deliver as close to January 1st as possible (the official birthday of all thoroughbred racehorses). Spring through summer are the best times to breed your horse. This is when the mares have the strongest heat cycles.
