Your dog may be going through "heat" a time when it wants to mate if it isn't fixed and is female. ∙ 13y agoWhat your cat may doing is purring, a sound made when her throat is in the guttal onset. If she starts purring, it's good, like her equivalent of us cooing or moaning.
If, however, you're convinced that her sound is a growl, she might be in pain, or had enough petting. Some cats only like attention in very short bursts, and will tell you when they have had enough by growling or swishing their tail in an irritated manner. If you can consistently hear the growing sound every time you touch her, and can determine that she's not purring, you might want to take her to the vet, who can check her out.

∙ 15y agoIt probably doesn't want to be picked up. If its a new cat then it may need to get to know you better. If you've had the cat for a while now it probably doesn't like being picked up.
