It is not recommended to put a rat and mouse together unless done so from a very very young age. Female Mice and Rats can store sperm,and therefore give birth at a later date without presence of a male. A rat has more chromosomes then a mouse. There are also protective layers over the animals egg that protects it from being fertilized by another species. A rat and a mouse will not cross breed.
