Unlike humans that can express themselves if a cat is not feeling well and in pain they will generally go off to a secluded area of the home and stay away from family. If they have been injured or in severe pain they will howl if the pain is bad enough. If you think your cat is in pain then please see a vet.

For some people it is a matter of religion. Cats go either to Heaven, back to Earth to be reincarnated, or just mingle around on Earth as spirits. They can really go wherever they want... This is sort of a difficult question to answer. Hope I helped! :)
