Most farmers have a building where they will keep their chickens. In this building they often have roosts, which are perches the chickens can climb onto to sleep because they seem to feel safer when they are off the ground.

In the chicken coop with the hens. He will guard them from predators like weasels and rats (roosters are usually the first victim to bigger weasels) If all you have are roosters then they need safe shelter, away from winter drafts and rain. Roosters need (just like hens) a perch minimum about 2 ft. off the ground for sleeping.

Most breeds roost. Roosting means to perch above the ground. The very heavy meat breeds that cannot roost off the floor will seek the highest point available. They fluff up their feathers and sleep.

Roosters prefer to sleep off the ground in a protected area. If there is no coop available, they will roost in trees.

Chickens do better when they roost at night up off the ground. And they're happier, also. It is the natural way for a bird to sleep.

In order to escape a predator that sees or smells better than they do while at night, they often sleep high if able.
