The tiger is a fairly recent immigrant to southeast Asia and south China, having came down from the northern Asian regions a few thousand years ago. As the northern most tiger, the Siberian, flourishes in cold and snow, the Bengal and other subspecies also demand a way to keep cool. Tigers footpads, for example, burn on heated rock, whereas those of the leopard do not. Tigers simply have not become completely acclimated to the warm climates where five of the six subspecies live. Therefore, in order to live, tigers have adapted to a love of water, spending much time there. They are great swimmers, one tiger swam a half mile to a ship docked at sea!
