It is possible to get a dog free of charge or for a small charge and then there are dogs that can cost hundreds of dollars.

If you speak with friends, neighbors or classmates you may find someone that has a pregnant dog or one they wish to give away. Another option is to check newspaper and local ads that contain an animal section and see if anyone is offering to give a dog away.

There are always shelters that have animals that need a good home. Usually you can adopt a dog from a shelter for a low price which should cover things such as needed shots for the dog as well as licensing and perhaps other things. The nice thing about this option is that you are helping an animal that may have been abused or that is permanently lost and is in desperate need to find a home.

Their is a more expensive option to buy from a private seller of dogs or from a pet store. Some puppies or dogs sold by private breeders or ireputable pet stores may get their animals from puppy mills which in turn add to the the number of animals that exist and can potentially end up in a shelter.

Finally depending on the location you live there may be abandoned or stranded dogs that could use a home. If after a search for the owner by looking for identification on the dog or putting an ad in the local paper about the found dog does not find the actual owner perhaps you would like to keep that dog.

A stranded or lost dog or one that is given away free will probably need vaccinations, need to be licensed and there is a the option of having the dog

fixed as well as food, water and toys as well as other costs but that can lead to a healthier happier dog.

They go through years of training

The School I work for, like most have 3 stages of training.

0-8 months the dog is with a puppy raiser family, teaching basic sit/stay/down commands and housebreaking. Usually at the end of this stage the dog it AKC-CGC (Canine Good Campanion) tested.

8-12 months the dog is exposed to public access, malls, stores, resturants, at the end of this test the dog is given the ADI Public Access Test.

12-24 months is the advanced training where the dog learns how to do the service, i.e. hearing, guiding and retrieving, all the service dog tasks are taught at this stage.

Hi,

If you know how to teach a dog any behavioral methods without help from a tutorial, follow here:

• Find out if your dog has the potential to become a service dog.

• Neuter or spay your dog

• Train basic obedience

• Teach the dog to be as well-behaved unleashed as leashed.

• Teach your dog not to greet other people.

• Train a little agility with the dog.

• Socialize your dog a lot.

• Teach your dog to take no note of cats, food on the ground, a stranger talking to the dog or vehicles (especially moving vehicles).

• Teach the dog at least three tasks that you need help with because of your disability.

• Certify your service dog. you can certify your service dog here: animalidshop.com which is best organisation in US.

Do you need a license to have a service dog?

You do not need a specialized licence that says "service dog" for a service dog. Any that you buy online are legally worthless and a waste of money. What you do need is to licence your dog with your state, as every dog owner in your state is required to do, and let them know that this dog has been trained to be your service dog. Some may require proof of your qualifications to have a service dog or ask questions about what tasks your service dog performs for you. The federal government does not require that any service dog be certified by any organization or take any test to be "granted" public access. As long as you are qualified to have a service dog (you must be legally disabled under ADA standards to legally have one) and the dog is extensively and highly trained to be a service dog (some states allow service dogs still "in training" the same public access as fully trained service dogs) plus task trained to mitigate your disability, the dog is a legal service dog and you are permitted in public with it. Any business online that sells certifications, registrations, ID's, licenses or vests that instantly make your dog a service dog are complete scams. What they sell is for novelty purposes only and will hold no legal weight in court should you be accused of portraying your pet as a service dog or being unqualified to have one. Save your money. It takes around two years of hard work to train a service dog. It's not something that can be rushed. If you try you could burn out the dog and have to wash it out of training.

Why do service dogs wear a vest?

Service dogs wear a vest so that they are easily identified. It is not required by the federal law, but it does make access easier. It also helps the dog differentiate from "work" and "play". When the vest is on - they are working. It is not ok, however, to put a vest on just any dog and claim that it is a service dog. That does a disservice to those who truly need the dog.

Can an Belgian Malinois be a guide dog?

Any type of dog can be a service dog. The most common service dog breed is the Labrador Retriever. It also depends on the temperament of the dog. For example, you would not want a highly energetic dog who does not listen to commands to become a service dog. A dog should be properly trained and (and possibly certified) to become a service dog.
