This depends upon how big the "group" is. Among the insects (which includes ants, butterflies, locusts), the beetle has the widest variety and occupies the most diverse array of ecological niches. Bacteria are prokaryotes, they are not classified in the kingdom of animals. Animals are multicellular (metazoans). The most successful vertebrate would be the fish. There are way more fish than there are birds, reptiles, and mammals (including cetaceans) combined, and fish date back to the Ordovician, perhaps earlier.
