A fixed action pattern is a sequence of unlearned acts that is essentially unchangeable and usually carried to completion.

A sign stimulus is the trigger or external cue that causes the FAP

For example, with the red bellied male stickleback fish attack other males because they see the other red belly (or anything red for that matter). The red would be the sign stimulus, and the attack because of the red would be the fixed action pattern.

Fixed action patterns are usually more complex than other unlearned behaviours, and are specific to all members of a species (or one gender of a species), unlike a reflex action which is seen across numerous species. An example of a fixed action pattern is birds all migrating to the same place at the same time, or salmon swimming upstream to the place of their birth at a specific time.

Definition of behavioral adaptations?

Adaptive behavior is a type of behavior that is used to adapt to another type of behavior or situation. This is often characterized by a kind of behavior that allows an individual to substitute an unconstructive or disruptive behavior to something more constructive. These behaviors are most often social or personal behaviors. For example a constant repetitive action could be re-focused on something that creates or builds something. In other words the behavior can be adapted to something else.

How is instinctive behavior acquired?

Instinct is behaviour that is inherited rather than learned. We might say that a person who often fights has an aggressive instinct. But the person may not have been born with a desire to fight - and, with a different home or school background might never have developed it. An inborn pattern of behavior that is characteristic of a species and is often a response to specific environmental stimuli. An instinct is inherited.

What is the subject and the verb in this sentence the chicken ran from the dog?

The subject is the chicken, and the verb is ran. The chicken is obviously the subject because it is what the sentense is about, it is following through with the action of the verb, which is running away from the dog. The verb is always the action word.
