Carolus Linnaeus is usually credited as the father of modern taxonomy and scientific nomenclature. He broke down each species into hierarchical groups:
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
Linnaeus originally broke down all organisms into either the animal or plant kingdom with a third kingdom for minerals. The kingdoms now include, in addition to animalia and plantae, fungi, protista, archaea and eubacteria.

plants and animals are classified as living things
This is true because there were (and are) a wide variety of animals, some that seem to be a mix between plants and animals, but are more animal than plant or vice versa. This certainly makes it quite complicated and confusing when it comes to the categorical process of scientifically naming plants and animals.
plants and animals are both living things.
The relationship between the plants and animals is called symbiotic relationship. Which means that both are dependent on each other. For example, the plants give off oxygen which the animals intake and the animals give off carbon dioxide, which the plants need.
Plants And Animals
Aristotle initially divided living organisms only into two groups which are plants and animals. The system was not proven to be good because there were too many species of plants and animals. However, the system was used for 2000 until the time of Linnaeus.
Aristotle divided living things into plants and animals and then subdivided animals into land, water and air. He subdivided plants into small, medium, and large. This caused problem because some animals traveled by walking, swimming and flying.
The likes of plants and animals would be that they are both living organisms and are composed of cells. However plants can make there own food and can not move.
