Usually all animals (not just elephants) are referred to by their Genus and Species. This is only convention, you could refer to any animal by its complete taxonimy: Kingdom, Phylum, Order, Family, Genus, Species, Subspeices, InfraSpeicies, Tribe, Variation. With all Sub, infra, Supra and Intermedial subdivisions inbetween. It just depends on how particular you want to be in your discussion.
