Tigers are hunted because: They are dangerous to humans They are dangerous to domesticated animals They are prized as trophies, and for medicinal and religious uses Though many people are concerned about the fate of species of animals and plants, the idea of conservation and the big picture of life on earth as a whole is fairly new. If you are the one who is afraid of being eaten, or if you will endure hardship if your cattle are killed you might be less concerned with the beauty of the species.

Probably the biggest threat however is based on greed. Killing to protect yourself will not decimate a population as long as there are sanctuary areas, or places where humans and animals do not often cross paths. However, the rarer something is, the more valuable it is as a commodity. If someone is willing to pay, another is willing to do whatever it takes to get the money.
