Why did god choose the men that lap the water like a dog?

There are two widely accepted thoughts about this question.

1. Those that lapped up the water rather than getting on their knees were more aware of their surroundings, and were more attentive to the enemy who may be close by. When the Lord chose the ones who would lap the water, He choose those best suited for battle. I disagree with this because from the beginning, the Lord chose Guideon, who was by his own words, "My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family (Judges 6:15)," so why would the Lord all of a sudden switch strategies, and choose the best suited for the task?

2. The second thought is that God continued to chose those who were the least prepared. In Gideon's time, dogs were considered despised creatures, so by chosing the ones who lapped like dogs, the Lord chose the least of the least. Just as Gideon was part of the weakest clan and the least of his family, it would follow that the Lord chose the weakest and lowliest soldiers. One reason the Lord only chose 300 men to fight the Midianites was so that there would be no way the soldiers would be able to claim the victory on their own strength. The Lord would receive the glory for the defeat of the Midianites, so of course he would use only 300 men and 300 men who were the least likely to succeed in their own strength.
