Two ears allow you to triagulate in on the source of the sound. One ear would only inform you that there is a sound, you wouldn't know the direction of its source. For trianulation it is better if the ears are as far apart as possible.

∙ 15y agoThe same reason you and I have two eyes. With two eyes we can determine depth by way of depth perception. This is not able to do with just one. With two ears, we and animals can determine the location of something immediately without having to adjust our heads to make a determination of direction. This is primarily a self defense method. For hunters, two ears are used to find prey sometimes through snow, grass, soil or for owls, in complete darkness.

∙ 13y agoThe humans have ears because, I know this sounds strange, they developed from fish gills before humans, and most mamals- evolved yet. The cells and amoeba where made to take in oxygen and vibrations, and well, somehow the muscles and cells developed to take in sound waves. Pretty cool huh?

∙ 11y agoTwo ears give the hearer the ability to sense the direction of the source of the sound. The difference in time of arrival of the sound indicates the direction. If the sound arrives at the same time, the source is at the same distance from each ear, so the sound is directly in front of you (or behind you). Try snapping your fingers in front of you to the left, right in front of your face, and to the right- notice how you can tell where the sound originates!
