Ants always travel in a line because,a single ant which is in search of food release some chemical juice all the way such that all other ants can easily find the food by following the smell of the juice, that is why all the ants travel in a line.

When ants travel in a straight line you expect rain?

No. Ants will move however they find best to find food, and this is not affected by the weather. Most of the time, scattered ants are scouts searching for food, and ants moving in a line are ants following a trail to or from food/supplies. Ants do infact move to the weather. If it is about to rain they will all be moving around thier nest in a hurry try to fix up and holes where water can get in. They do move out and around further when it isn't going to rain but they do stick closer when it is going to rain.

When do ants move in a single file line?

This is because ants leave a chemical trail for other ants to follow. They are following a trail laid out by another ant that will take them to food, water or their home. Ants leave this trail of pheromones or scent as they travel. After finding food they return to the nest (following their own scent trail) and communicate this fact to other ants who then follow the scent trail to the food. As more ants travel the trail the scent gets stronger (easier to follow) and the random bumps are smoothed out making the trail straighter.

Why won't ants cross a chalk line and what is the reason behind their aversion to it?

Ants won't cross a chalk line because the powdery texture of chalk disrupts their ability to follow scent trails. Ants rely on pheromones to communicate and navigate, and the chalk interferes with this process, causing them to avoid crossing the line.

Why does the worker ant panic when he loses his place in line?

When ants forage a large ant looks around, and when he finds an area of alot of food he walks back and leaves a scent for the others to follow. The ants get the signal and the smaller worker ants follow. By stepping out of place he spreads the scent and if too many ants make the mistake then the line has many confusing paths. Therefore it is almost instinct to ants.
