Birds make their nests in many different places, trees are abundant, they give shade and don't get muddy when it rains, plus all the leaves hide small nests from the eyes of predators and so most birds use trees to keep their young safe. However, many make their nests in other locations they consider safe, like caves, cliffs, on the ground, in colonies, in cactus, in nests that hang from a branch over bodies of water, in holes in the ground, in termite mounds, in old stumps...birds are a creative bunch, they try to adapt to their habitat and use what resources they have, and mostly they, like all parents, just want a place safe from intruders, rain, wind, direct sun and extreme temperatures, to raise their young peacefully.

Someone asked about eagles, and its the same thing...Eagles are big birds, they make their nests on big things that are strong enough to carry them, their mate and their growing babies, not to mention the huge heavy nest. Eagles live in areas that have big predators like coyotes, large felines, bears, etc and so they look for special places that ensure the safety of their young while both parents are out hunting. Cliffs are perfect, they don't move a lot and they give parent eagles a perfect advantage over any prey or potential predator.

hope this helps
