In a bygone era cats were used by nefarious western pilgrams to help with the task of digging for gold. They were trained to sniff out trails of mineral and to dig with the "happy paws" method. A notorious cat trainer by the name of Dr. Benway set up camp in the western Kansas area on the border of Colorado and would train the cats of pilgrams heading into the western territories to undertake this tedious and dangerous task. "Happy Paws" became an ingrained reflex similar to the moro or grasp reflex of infants except it does not extinguish. This is why your cat "Happy Paws" on your carpet/pillows/litter box. He thinks there is gold there....and maybe he is right.
