Cats think of you as a cross between a room-mate and a brother or sister. They bring animals they have killed as presents for you. This is their way of saying, "See, I am doing my part to feed us" and also, "See what a good hunter I am!" The nicest way to respond is to praise the cat. I always pick up the dead animal and tell the cat it's a great present and that I will eat it later. Then I put the dead animal outside or bury it. It's just their instinct. The only thing you can do is praise the cat... if you try to punish the cat to make him stop doing it, you're wrong. Instead of stopping, the cat will try harder to get praised and somehow might end up hating you instead.
