Yes, it is now thought that all cats, even "big" cats that can roar, can purr. Big cats, with their specially-designed specially-designed larynx's and hyoid bone in the throat that enable them to roar, can only make a purring sound when exhaling, and not in a constant stream like other cats.
It is unclear why cats purr, although it is well known that domestic cats purr when content, to show affection or to comfort themselves when sick or in pain.

∙ 13y agoCats obviously won't like an unfriendly scratch from another cat, but that is a very different story for when humans scratch them. Cats love being scratched. You have to find the 'Sweet spot' on your cat, a place it likes being scratched. Some common ones are behind the ears, under the chin and on the tummy. My cat adores a scratch under the chin, and my brother likes a scratch behind the ears. Try moving you hand in a scratching sort of movement near your cat, and it will quickly catch on and rub against your hand.
