Chickens make many different vocalizations, with different meanings. No one really knows the exact meanings, but some good guesses can be made. For example, chickens make a sound that some call a 'cackle' or an 'egg song', that sounds something like a repeated 'ba-DAWK'. This is a warning call, often used when a chicken sees something that is 'suspicious' and could be a threat, or when they see something threatening, and is a call often used by hens when they come out of a nesting area, usually one they consider 'unsafe'.
