It's not just firehydrants that dogs like. Male dogs will urinate on anything that stands still long enough. Trees, rocks, car tires, and yes I have seen them use a persons leg before. They use these things because they are marking their territory. Each dog has a different scent to their urine. As a dog runs around they are always sniffing everything. They are checking the scents that were left by other dogs. Once they find a scent of another dog, they also urinate there as if they are letting the other dog know that they were there. It's kind of like calling on the phone and no bodys home. They leave a message.
