The truth is, They sit, sleep, lay with their backs to you because they are in the path of danger to you. Should there be an issue they are first and fast to respond. In other words, they are in a protection way of rest. My dog faces the door of any room we are in.

They are protecting you. If you are in bed or in a chair, the animal will assume that your back is safe. If a threat approaches you head on, then the dog will be facing it and better able to defend you from it. Strange as it seems, it's a compliment.
