It seems that nobody really knows yet why ducks swim in circles.

However, observing their behavior lead me to believe that ducks swim in groups and in circle in order to agitate the water beneath and bring up closer to the surface the algae and plants that they feed from.

Another explanation is that it signals a change in the weather. From watching ducks on the Boise River, someone noticed that this happens when rain or a significant (10 degrees Fahrenheit or more) change in temperature is forecast. But this could be coincidental, of course. Or it could confirm that ducks eat more and stock up energy when they sense that a change in the weather is imminent.
