This is a defense mechanism. Since bats escape by flying, sleeping upside down allows them to rapidly drop and fly away if danger approaches while they are sleeping. If they were to sleep either lying on a surface or sitting on a floor, they would be much more vulnerable to predator during their sleeping hours. When bats relax, the weight of their upper bodies pulls down on the tendons connected to the talons and they clench closed. The weight of the bats keeps their talons closed, and the talon joint locks them into position. This system is so effective that, if bats die while roosting, they will continue to hangupside-down until something (or someone) shakes them loose
Pigs do not have a specific side they always sleep on. They can sleep on either side, typically alternating sides for comfort. Pigs often choose to sleep on their side or stomach, sometimes leaning against a solid surface for support.
Sheep typically sleep lying down, either on their side or curled up. They rest for short periods throughout the day and night, alternating between light sleep and deeper sleep. Sheep are known to be light sleepers, ready to wake up if they sense danger.
