The cause of kidney failure in dogs due to grapes and raisins is still unknown. It is known, however, that the danger occurs with both commercially-grown and home-grown grapes, so it is probably something in the grapes themselves rather than an insecticide or something like that. Raisins are even more toxic.

One or two grapes is no big deal, unless it's a small dog. More than that, or any amount of raisins, is a reason for a quick trip to the vet. The sooner support is initiated, the more likely a successful treatment.

Are grapes healthy to puppies?

No! Grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs and puppies, it can cause acute renal failure (sudden kidney failure) with anuria (a lack of urine production). If a dog eats enough raisins and grapes it can be deadly. If you want to give your dog a healthy treat, stick to baby carrots, a little banana, or an apple wedge or two (but no apple seeds, they're toxic to dogs).

Because of that, peeled or seedless grapes should also be avoided. Breed, sex, or age of a dog has no influence on the risk of being affected, and since there is no proven amount that is safe, you shouldn’t be giving your pup grapes or raisins at all.

Do grapes kill cats?

Grapes can cause kidney damage in cats and dogs. The toxic mechanism is currently unknown. Approximately 32 g/kg of raisins (about 5 ounces for a typical cat) was found to be toxic. (undried grapes would presumably be less toxic, by weight.)

Is it true that raisins are bad for pet dogs?

Yes, as few as 7 raisins can cause renal (kidney) failure in dogs. Never feed grapes or raisins to your dog. It doesn't matter whether the raisins or grapes are home or commercially grown. You can verify this information by searching for "raisins and dogs" using any search engine. Chocolate is also poisonous for dogs. Why cant dog eat grapes?

A grape or raisin is not inherently harmful, but several cases suggest excessive consumption can cause calcium and phosphorus retention by dogs. Ten cases were reported to the ASPCA between 1989 and 2002, and the exact metabolic mechanism could not be isolated. In all cases, severe renal disease resulted. At any rate, too much sugar (in dog food or human snacks) is not good for dogs, whose diet requires mainly proteins.
