Years ago the only reason we rode horses was because they were useful for transporting us and our belongings around from one area to another.

Today, horse-riding is used more as a leisure activity, rather than for any other purpose. Since they weere domesticated some 10,000 years ago, horses have been bred for riding, jumping and training.

The domestic hourse has a life-span of between 25 and 30 years, although some have lived to see their 40th birthday before now.

A horses pregnancy is a little longer than that of a human and lasts for 11 months. A mare (female horse) will usually only have one foal at a time and twins are very rare.

Because the horse is born with a long and sturdy backbone, they make ideal animals to ride. However, horses that are bred for spot such as show jumping are not allowed to enter top competitions until they at least five years old. This is because the horse's muscles and bones are not fully developed until then and they might injure themselves.
