I'm not sure why people keep finches as pets (all they seem to do is chirp and fly!), but I do know that parrots can be great companions. They're smart, have elaborate personalities, and can be a great joy to come home to after a bad day. Aside from a bit of noise and some mess, they're pretty lowmaintenance. They can get aggressive if not properly stimulated and taken care of, and the bigger ones (Macaws) can put quite a chomp in your finger. Quaker Parrots (or Monk Parakeets) are a small parrot that has great reviews as far as companionship goes. I personally own one, and he's the silliest, funniest, sweetest little thing you'd ever want to have! Almost better than a puppy.
