Humans are thought to be the only animals on the planet that use complex languages to communicate.

It probably started off as some sort of warning call, like a high grunting noise to alert the troops of a predator approaching, this then developed over many thousands of years to form the complex form of communication we, modern humans, use today.

But to answer your question: We talk to improve our development in life, it started as a warning that a predator was approaching, and is now used to build great cities and countries.

Imagine if we didn't talk, would you be able to complete an easy, functioning day?
