Most of the time its for looks in certain breeds like the Doberman or Rottweiler as most people have come custom to seeing these dogs with docked tails they do look funny with their tail left natural length. but if the tail has been damaged in some way a vets will take off the damage part of the tail if leaving it will create to much risk of infection or to much pain to the dog . please note it is against the law in some areas to dock dogs tails it is cruel to the animal and yes they do fell it just think of your finger or toe being cut off some people might tell you they don't have felling in their tall but they do so to answer your question it is just cosmetic.

∙ 15y agoTail docking and ear cropping are done primarily to meet "breed standards" developed mostly by those who show and breed dogs. For the majority of dogs, there is no medical necessity for either procedure though, occasionally, injury can make it necessary to modify the tail or ear(s).
