Early civilizations and many fairly modern ones believed that the organs and flesh of animals contained their essence. You could be brave as a tiger, strong as a bull etc. by eating their body parts. Warriors were prohibited from eating timid animals. This was expanded in some cultures where the body parts of dead enemies were eaten to take their bravery into you. Dead relatives were included in this as well.
Even today "Eat this, it'll make a man out of you!" can be heard. Vegetarians are thought of as pale and weak cause they don't get blood in their diet.
