You don't, the rooster is only to fertilize the eggs. Also, someone might want a rooster to wake them up in the morning.

Can rhode island chickens lay eggs without a rooster?

Yes All chickens will lay eggs without the need for a rooster. All a rooster does is fetilize the eggs, it does not induce the hen to lay an egg, she will do this anyway.

Do you need a rooster to produce eggs?

NO, hens lay eggs without roosters at all. The only thing roosters do for eggs, is fertilize them (Threw Mating) so that a chick can hatch.

Why is your hen staying in her box all the time?

She is brooding which means she is going to try to hatch eggs into chicks. Some of the other hens will lay eggs near her and she will roll those eggs under herself. If you have a rooster in the flock and want some chicks you should let her stay where she is but if your flock has no rooster then take the eggs away from her.

Can a hen lay eggs without mating?

Yes Pullets will start laying at about 5 months old. A rooster does not need to be involved at all. Eggs are produced without the help of a rooster. All the rooster does is fertilize the eggs and guard the flock. The chickens who produce the eggs you buy at the big supermarkets and grocery stores with live out their productive years without ever seeing a rooster. Yes Hens will lay without mating with a cockrel they will start to lay at about 5 months old. If a hen did lay after mating that egg may be fertile as that is all the Cockrel does. Why is a chicken egg a fertilized egg?

Not all chicken eggs are fertilized. Any egg that a chicken lays will be unfertilized unless there is a rooster around to fertilize the egg while it is inside the chicken.Chicken eggs are fertilized when a rooster is in with the hens. The rooster will breed with the hens to continute the chicken species. This is why eggs are fertilized. If you do not want your eggs fertilized, all you need to do is pull out the rooster, or roosters if there are more than one. This will cause the chickens to lya unfertilized eggs. When an egg is fertile it means it was in the beginning stage of hosting a baby. Basically, it is an egg from a hen that had previously had sex with a rooster. You probably don't want to think about that before eating them though. They are the most nutritious form of egg to eat.

How do you get non-fertile chicken eggs from the chicken?

To get non-fertile eggs you need to keep the hen and rooster separated, or get rid of your rooster all together.

Do laying hens need a rooster to produce an egg daily?

NO, hens don't need a rooster to lay at ALL. The amount of eggs laid, varys between the Age,Breed, and happiness of the hen. Good layers are Rhode Island Reds,Barbed Rock,Aracona,Americona, and many more. The only need for a rooster when it comes to eggs, is to fertilize them (threw Mating) so a chick will hatch.

Does the rooster have to crow to fertilise the eggs?

All roosters crow. But the crowing IS NOT what fertilizes the eggs. They are fertilized when the male mates with the female.

Will all eggs laid by hens grow and develop into embryos?

No. Unless there has been a rooster to inseminate the hen, the eggs will not be fertile.

Do roosters need to be separated from the hen and her eggs when hatched?

No. A rooster can stay with the hen and her young at all times. It is best not to introduce a new hen with young to your flock.

Do I need a rooster to have Rhode Island Red hens lay eggs?

No Rooster Needed for Laying HensNo. In fact, if you want eggs for food, you do not want any roosters because you probably want unfertilized eggs. However, if you want baby chicks, you must have a rooster with the flock.More input from Contributors:You will receive eggs from your "ladies" no matter what. Laying age is approximately 18 weeks. This is variable since all chickens are different, as one of mine just laid her first egg at 16 weeks to the day! Even if the egg is fertilized, it is still edible. The egg won't become a chick unless the hen sits and incubates it or you choose to incubate it. Otherwise, if you collect your eggs daily, there will be no chance of the fertilized egg growing to be a chick (which is especially true if you pop your eggs into the refrigerator after collection as I do).Lots of eggs/No RoosterMost eggs sold in Super Markets and grocery stores are laid by hens who have never been near a rooster. Market production farms do not keep the young rooster chicks. They are either killed outright or sold off for meat production. On the reverse side, the eggs you buy at the local farmers market or roadside stand are most likely fertilized. This does not add to or change the quality or nutrition value of the egg in any way as the eggs are collected daily and refrigerated within 24 hours. A fertilized egg takes about 48 to 72 hours under ideal temperatures and 80% humidity to start forming the embryo. After that begins it will take 21 days for the new chick to emerge from the shell.No. A rooster is not required for the hens to lay eggs. Hens will lay whether their eggs are fertilized or not. On the other hand, there are many benefits to having a rooster. The fact that a chicken egg has been fertilized has absolutely no affect on it's taste, and as long as the egg hasn't been brooded for more than 24 hours or so, there is no embryo growing in it, making it safe to eat even for vegetarians. Also, having a rooster means that you can let the hens have chicks, and not have to buy them from a hatchery anymore. Lastly, one of the most important arguments for keeping a rooster is that many, many roosters are killed simply because they aren't wanted. Millions are killed in hatcheries alone, because the demand for pullets is much greater than for rooster chicks. Keeping one or more will save them from that fate. Also, in rare cases, without a rooster around, one of the hens (usually the lead hen) will take up the 'mantle' of rooster and start acting like one, sometimes even going so far as to start crowing.
