Cole was mad in the beginning because the spirit bear wasnt affraid of him. so he wanted to kill it. the spirit bear was showing self diffence so he attacked cole. Cole realized that he wasnt very important to nature so he kind of changed. Cole saw the spirit bear again while he was almost dead in the forest, he spit at it and the spirit bear licked up his spit. At that point the Spirit bear trusted cole and cole trusted the spirit bear. the spirit bear let cole touch him and they were trusting each other.n the spirit bear walked away but cole does see him again later in the book.

Cole saw a massive white bear (the spirit bear) facing him.
He doesn't attack him after the first time. Because the first time Spirit Bear attacked him Cole was a threat, later in the book, Cole understands that for Spirit Bear to trust him he can't threaten Spirit Bear.
The greatest threat to the spirit bear is Cole
Because the Spirit Bear can look straight at Cole and is not scared at all. So because of the bear not being scared he vows to kill him.
