You may have done something to provoke him. If he does it again, look for any similarities between this time and the time before. He may be playing however; some cats simply play rough, and there isn't anything you can do about that. But here's my favorite reason:

It could mean he loves you. If he's gently nibbling or gnawing on you, it's a cat "kiss". You might want to tap him on the nose so he doesn't do it, but you should feel privileged if this is the case. Cats do whatever they want so if a cat bites theres no reason what it means.
