Why does chickens have bare spots?

Possibly because she has a territorial or heirarchical problem with the other hen(s). When hens hassle eat other, it sometimes manifests by pecking attacks to the head. Try sequestering the hen for a day or two and see if this situation changes.

Chicks grow rapidly after emerging from the shell. Fluffy balls soon develop new growth soon to be feathers. Not all feathers grow at the same time and for the first days/weeks after the fluff is gone the birds can look disheveled and scruffy. There are a number of reasons why chickens lose feathers and leave a bare spot.

When the rooster mates with the hen, he often grabs her by the back of the neck with his beak to force her down into mating position. This can pluck out feathers.
