Chemical repellants are the best way to keep gnats away from you. Look for a bug spray with deet or permethrin. Some camping equipment comes treated with these products. Deet spray will need to be reapplied frequently.

If you'd prefer not to use chemicals on your skin, there are some home remedies to keep gnats away. Rubbing basil or mint leaves on your skin will help keeps gnats away, as they hate the smell. You can also make a homemade gnat spray with one ounce of canola oil and a combination of essential oils (four drops each of cedar and lavender, two drops each of eucalyptus and rosemary, and one drop of peppermint).

Gnats do not fly in the eyes on purpose. We humans just walk into their flying space. If you get a gnat in they eye, be sure to wash your eye out with cold water.

Gnats will keep swarming your face because they are attracted to the scent of something you have on. It could be your hair shampoo, conditioner, perfume, body wash, or even makeup.

Gnats get on your wounds because they are attracted to excrement from the wounds. They will be drawn to any open wounds and cuts.
