Best Answer

Hedgehogs have evolved spines to protect themselves. Other softer animals, like rabbits and mice, are easy for Birds of Prey to pick up with their claws, or for larger carnivores to eat. The spines on a hedgehog make it very difficult for any other animals to bite or attack them, especially when the hedgehog curls into a ball.
