Human evolution goes back from mammals (what we are) to reptiles. One of the huge breakthroughs in the sucess of reptiles was adapting to a land existence. This included both internal fertilization and the amniotic egg (prior to this (by and large) animals shed their gametes into the water.. Our fertilization is internal because via the processes of evolution and adaptation that shapes all life on this planet yielded internal fertilization as a way to live on land yet still be able to keep the gametes (sperm and egg) from drying out. Like your private parts...thank a reptile!
