Because without it the green algae would not be able to photosynthesis and would eventually die. This would mean that there would be no oxygen (O2) being produced for the animals as well as their food (Glucose C6H12O6) supply being cut.

∙ 11y agoSunlight is needed in ecosystems because it is the source of energy of all food chains in the ecosystem. If there is no sunlight, plants which are the producers in the ecosystem can´t undergo photosynthesis, die, and the whole ecosystem collapses.
