n the 19th century, writing slates were made of slate, which is more durable than paper and was cheap at the time when paper was expensive. It was used to allow children to practice writing. Thin slabs of slate, typically three inches by five (roughly 9 × 12 cm), were also bound into "slate books" for adult use in workplaces.

What happens if you eat slate pencils?

Slate pencils are made from a type of sedimentary rock known as Shale, which is composed of mud that is a mixture of clay minerals (kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite) and small quantities of other minerals especially quartz and calcite. The ratio of clay to the other minerals gives the shale its colour. Shale from which slate pencils are made, are light gray in colour. Slate pencils in some regions are made from soft Soapstone, which is a metamorphic rock, composed dominantly of talc. Your eating them shows that you have a condition called PICA. It usually occurs in a person who has a mineral deficiency. Since the main ingredient in slate pencils is either clay or talc, they tend to reduce ones appetite, and more seriously reduce the absorption of iron in your body and make a person drastically anemic. I have personally experienced this and so can tell with a certain degree of certainity. I used to eat slate pencils at the rate of a box per day(20 pieces), and finally after a while I was diagnosed with Iron deficiency anemia. My haemoglobin levels dropped to half the normal range. I would advise anyone who has been eating slate pencils or having the urge to eat them, to visit a doctor as soon as possible and get ur CBC test done to determine your haemoglobin levels before it is too late. Correct whatever mineral deficiency you have and once that is corrected the craving to eat slate pencils will automatically vanish and until then please exert ur will power and stop eating those slate pencils. Gud luck and stay strong.

What is a rock composed of small dark colored minerals arranged into thin plates and sometimes used to make shingles and blackboards?

The rock is most likely slate, which is a fine-grained metamorphic rock composed of clay minerals such as muscovite, chlorite, and quartz. Slate's ability to split into thin sheets makes it suitable for shingles, blackboards, and other applications where a flat surface is desired.

What did Victorians use to write on slate?

Victorians typically used slate pencils, which were small sticks of natural slate, to write on slate boards. These slate boards were a common writing surface for children in schools during the Victorian era, as they were reusable and easy to clean. The slate pencil would leave a mark on the board, and when needed, the writing could be wiped off with a damp cloth. This method was practical and economical for education at the time.
