Really great question. No one can say for sure, because it is certainly not because of the usual reasons. There is still plenty of forest edge canebrakes for nesting, and they are not hunted. It never was a common species, and began it's decline in the thirties. Some suggest that the bird was driven to near extinction by competition with more common species like the Prothonotary warbler, that shares it's habitat, but this makes no sense, because the birds feeding methods were quite different. The Bachman's warbler nests and feeds close to the ground, while other warblers are birds of the treetops. They have not been seen in the wild in many years, until a wintering female was videotaped in Cuba in 2007. The species numbers must be extremely small, and all efforts should be made to protect the canebrakes of the southern swamps where they reside. To be looked for in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
